SKILL TESTING 101

Skills Testing 101 for Gymnastics Parents

Welcome to our Skills Testing process! This guide will help you understand how we assess gymnasts and how they progress through the levels.

When Testing Takes Place

  • Skill Testing Weeks: Testing occurs during Weeks 8 and 9 of the session for Beginner, Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 classes.
  • End-of-Session Recommendations: Level recommendations will be made at the end of Week 9, so your gymnast has time to enroll in the next session.
  • Week 10 Classes: Classes will still take place during Week 10, but no additional skills testing will be done.

Attendance

Attendance is especially important during Weeks 8 and 9. If your gymnast misses
both testing weeks, please plan to attend an Open Gym (Fridays 6:30-8 PM) to complete a quick skills test. We are not able to offer skills testing outside of regular classes or open gym due to capacity.

Pre-Team & Team Invites

  • Pre-Team: Invites happen throughout the year. However, to compete during the pre-team season (March-May), an invite must be extended by the end of the Winter One session. If a gymnast is invited after that time, they can still train with the pre-team but won’t compete.
  • Team Invites: These are made at the end of the Spring session and, if needed, at the end of the Summer session.
  • Pre-team gymnasts won’t be assessed at the end of each session like recreational gymnasts but will receive feedback throughout the year.

Progression Through Levels

Progression happens at different paces for every gymnast. Coaches assess readiness based on
skills and class readiness to ensure gymnasts are prepared both physically and mentally for the next level.

It’s common for gymnasts to stay in the same level for multiple sessions. This ensures strong foundational skills, which are key to
safety and success. If your gymnast remains at the same level, please remind them this is part of the process and not a reflection of failure. The goal is to progress safely and confidently.

The Assessment Process

Our coaches use a
skills rubric to provide the most consistent and accurate feedback possible. While every coach follows the same criteria, slight differences in assessment styles may occur. Please be patient, and feel free to ask questions if any discrepancies arise.

Open Communication

Our coaches are available
before and after classes to connect with parents and gymnasts. We encourage you to use this time to discuss progress or concerns.

Final Thoughts

  • Have fun along the way! Every session is progress, whether your gymnast advances levels or continues to build skills.
  • Our coaches are here to ensure that each gymnast builds a strong foundation and progresses safely.

Thank you for your support and trust in our coaching team!
